Why is disabling Private Address required?

Modified on Wed, 28 Dec, 2022 at 12:07 AM

CadetNet authenticates devices by identifying them using their MAC address.  This is why it is necessary to enter each device's MAC address into the dashboard prior to joining the network.  Private Address (also known as MAC Randomization) causes the device's MAC address to periodically change, which will cause it to stop working on CadetNet because it can no longer be authenticated.

If your device tends to work for short periods of time before failing to reach the internet while using CadetNet, it is likely due to leaving Private Address turned on.  (Sometimes it will also re-enable itself without interaction even if it was previously turned off, especially after software updates).  To turn it off, see Disabling Private Address.
